We, the undersigned members of FOCI (Friends Of a Competitive Internet), urge you to support competition and diversity in the Internet’s core infrastructure. We emphatically oppose (any extension of) monopoly power in the management of the Internet’s infrastructure.

As of October 16, 2000, we specifically oppose the bid by NSI and Afilias for the .Web top-level domain both because of its extension of NSI’s monopolistic power and because of the lack of technical due-diligence evident in their proposal (at least, those parts of it that are pubically accessible).

Additionally, as of October 17, 2000, we specifically oppose the bid by Melbourne IT, Inc. and NeuStar, Inc. as JVTeam, LLC because it represents an extension of an existing, entrenched power, as opposed to the introduction of diversity and competition called for in the “Criteria for Assessing TLD Proposals”
